SEND Governance

The governance of SEND is a crucial role. Not only can effective governance ensure that children and young people with SEND are well supported within schools, but it can also drive wider improvements that impact across the whole setting. nasen’s training supports governors on their journey towards more accountable, effective and ethical SEND governance.

Part one

Part one is designed to support governors at the start of the SEND governance journey or those wishing to refresh their understanding. It will cover many of the fundamentals of SEND, including: 

  • What is SEND? What are the roles and responsibilities in schools? What are the statutory requirements around SEND?
  • How do schools identify and meet needs? How is it funded?
  • What is the role of the SEN Governor or trustee?


Following completion of the session governors will: 

  • feel more confident in their governance role
  • understand how to work effectively with the SENCO 
  • enable a more strategic approach to SEND, resulting in improved outcomes for pupils with SEND

Part Two

Part two is for more experienced governors or governors who have completed Part one. It will build on from the fundamentals to examine: 

  • How to understand and scrutinise data for SEND
  • How to use the ‘SEND Governance Review’ to evaluate the school’s approach
  • How to respond to common challenges

Upon completion of the session governors will:  

  • be able to support, challenge and hold to account school leaders for the progress of pupils with SEND
  • be able to identify strengths and areas for development in SEND governance in their school
  • support the development of an environment where outcomes for pupils with SEND should improve, including a reduction in exclusions
